Fr. Edmond Barry.
Fr. Barry was born in Midleton in 1837 and died in 1900.
It is clear from his writings that he had a lifelong interest in genealogy and in particular the history of the Barry family. He was also an authority on Ogham stones, on which he published a number of papers.
He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Antiquaries, a Vice-President of that Society for Munster, and a Member of the Royal Irish Academy.
Fr Barry’s main work was entitled simply ‘Barrymore’, when first published as a series (see below) in the Journal of The Cork Historical and Archaeological Society (JCHAS). The series was republished as ‘Barrymore – Records of the Barrys of County Cork From the Earliest to the Present Time, With Pedigrees’ by Guy and Co., Cork, in 1902.
It appears that two fold out pedigrees which formed part of the original series were omitted from the published book.
At the time of writing this the JCHAS is being published on the internet - Here
The two genealogical tables missing from the book are available here as items no. 14 and 15.
We are most fortunate that Fr. Barry published this work. The fact that he was thoroughly conversant with both Latin and Old Irish meant that he was particularly suited to translating many of the old manuscript sources. Sadly, Fr. Barry’s work is difficult to read and gives the impression of having been compiled in a considerable hurry. Given that some of the JCHAS articles were published posthumously, perhaps he was aware of his impending early demise and he wished to get as much of his research as possible into print before that sad event and so did not have the time to give the proofing attention for which he might have wished. This author is not aware that Fr. Barry’s manuscript collection is extant, but would be delighted to learn otherwise.
The entire work would benefit from extensive revision but this may not be easy as Fr. Barry does not always give details as to his sources, some of which may no longer exist.
This internet edition has been scanned from the book (and undoubtedly requires further proof-reading). The whole has been broken into more manageable sections though these are often somewhat arbitrary. Many formatting changes have been made, especially in breaking unwieldy chapters into lists, etc.
The ‘Notes and Corrections’ which formed a large part of the 5th article in the series have been incorporated into the original text, except that:
The Addition proposed for Page 93 line 37 (Add “Cal. S.P. Eng.”) has also been omitted , for lack of clarity!
The Page numbers referred for some of the other corrections are incorrect, as follows:
The Correction proposed for Page 78 should read Page 18.
The Correction proposed for Page 79 should read Page 19.
The Correction proposed for Page 84 should read Page 24.
The Correction proposed for Page 86 should read Page 26
The Correction proposed for Page 79 should read Page 19.
